Congrats on your new pup - yes, he should be fine, and a treat or a small meal should be fine too. It will help start off your relationship on a positive note. I can see the problem of feeding him right away if he is very stressed - the stress can lead to GI issues, but if that is the case, he might be too stressed to eat or accept any treats.
He should be fine with getting a little break from the crate and then being put back in again for the night. Chances are he will be tired from his trip, probably won't have slept much during the flight, if at all, so he will probably just go to sleep, and the crate will be a nice safe place.
Use your own judgement on feeding him. I've never heard to not feed them after shipping - if he seems fine, and warms up to you well, and wants to eat, then a light meal and some treats should do no harm.
