Food issues the other way around
I hope to get some ideas how to tackle Herrmann's (11 mths now) issue with eating.
The bottom line is - he always was a bad eater. For example between food and play (or general something to do) food comes out always last.
We have tried several types of food including raw, but he doesn't get excited about any of them.
He never eats if we just put his bowl in the kitchen (short sniff, then he is gone). He only eats if he is alone or if we hand-feed him. He also eats if we give him our leftovers (still it looks more like a chore for him).
When hand-feeding he sometimes simply turns his head away or takes the pebbles into the mouth, but spits it out again. He is getting enough physical and mental exercise, no couch potato here ;-)
As he often gets our leftovers I thought he might be spoiled so offered him twice a day his bowl with only his food, but he would not eat for 2 days and after that eat half a portion slowly without any enthusiasm.
His weight is fine and he is just getting out of growth, so his portion size (and appetite) is going down now anyway, but it is a constant struggle to motivate him to eat.
It is also harder to motivate him to do anything in training/obedience as he is less than interested in getting the normal dry treats (when I offer him one as a reward he often doesn't take it), so I rely mostly on verbal and play/toy-type rewards.
Do any of you have experience with such a dog ? Any thoughts/suggestions ?
