I'm going to start off by saying I'm also venting, but need some advise of others that may have also had this problem also!
Rocco is 16 weeks old and weighs 40 lbs. We switched his food three weeks ago to Wellness LBP and his stools were normal after the transition. I took him to the vet two weeks ago for a bad skin infection under his front leg that was red, swollen and itchy. The vet gave him benadryl and cephalexin. He started having diarrhea within two days of starting these meds. The skin infection cleared up and we stopped the antibiotics after 6 days. He continued to have diarrhea. We stopped the bully sticks and limited the treats and no improvement with the stools. He developed a new skin rash spot in his groin, and we already had a follow up appointment scheduled for today with the vet from the last infected spot. I believe the rashes are starting from bug bites that he is getting from outside, then licking and itching makes them open and infected.
I am a nurse, so I do understand the workings of the body, but today the vet confused me. She was saying the the food switch and the antibiotics could have wiped out his normal flora of the bowel, causing the diarrhea. She then started preaching about Science Diet or Purina Pro Plan for food recommendations (I'm not planning on switching to either of these brands). She was also not familiar with Wellness brand food either. She then pulled up a google search for a recall from Oct 2012 and said that was the problem, seriously?!?!
Anyways, she gave him an antibiotic shot for his skin, then prescribed biomox antibiotic for his skin, Metronidazole for his bowel, and a probiotic capsule. She also suggested adding rice to his food.
Now I agree with the probiotic and adding rice, I was also thinking about switching foods to Exclusve LBP (Rocco's sister has been on it with no problems). What are your thoughts about the two antibiotics? I bought coconut oil for the rash and started with it this afternoon.
Any opinions are helpful! Thank you!
