Pancaking during walks
Hey everyone. I'm new. Already did an intro thingy. I expected to be a lot more active on this forum but my Pom recently passed and I haven't really been in the mood. And to all those who asked to see pics of Ava I uploaded a few not sure how to put them in a post just yet but ill get around to it.
Anyway Ava isn't that great on the leash yet but working at the shelter I've experienced WAY worse. The one thing I really do not know how to handle is when she lays down during our walks and won't budge.
It's always when there is another dog approaching. I read dogs do this when they don't want to be perceived as a threat. So it's actually a friendly thing for her to do I guess. Once the other dog approaches her , she then gets up n sniffs and usually tries to play with them (her form of play is throwing her paws up at the other dog...we'll save that for another post lol) and usually everything is fine. Aside from the normal puppy over excitement that she quickly recovers from if we keep walking.
My question is what do I do to stop her from becoming a 58lb pancake on the ground when I'm walking her? I don't always WANT to stop and let her play with every dog we see and likewise not everyone wants my dogs paws flying in their dogs face. It's just very annoying and as hard as I try not to get frustrated with her I usually end up dragging her away. She made me look especially stupid when I had an altercation with another dog walker yesterday and I was done telling him off and wanted to continue on my way and my dog is frozen on the floor like an idiot. Lml.
It's also annoying (and potentially dangerous) when I am biking with her and she does it. Usually we are in "move mode" enough that she will only visually fixate and maybe crouch a little but somedays it's full pancake to the ground and I'm forced to stop the bike wherever we're at.
She knows the command "leave it" and "focus" it works on our cat and even on squirrels and birds ! But not at all with other dogs. It's like I'm talking to a wall.
