Safe for Puppy? Opinions Please!
So I am currently looking into a different job and I'm a little concerned about Duke. Duke is almost 6 months and all around a great pup. He hasn't destroyed anything and hasn't gone to the bathroom in the house for I can't even remember how long.
Right now, I work Monday to Friday 9 to 5 sort of thing and I'm able to come home for lunch to let him out. The new job that I am looking into will be rotating shifts with my wife (Same job as she has now). So for two weeks we would be on days and then two weeks we would be on nights.
I am worried because we will not be able to come home for lunch. 30 minute lunch and the drive will be about 45 mins... Plus, night shift will be 10 hour shifts plus the drive each way, he is looking to be alone for up to 12 hours. We are going to look into a Dog walker but may have a hard time with the night shift. I will have to find someone that will be willing to come in late at night. Best case I am thinking around 8, 9 would probably be the latest someone would come over???
So during the day and at night, he has his crate in a penned in area, in our dinning room. Tile floors and nothing in there except for his stuff. He also has a doggy door that would allow him to go in and out of the house.
My concerns are though, he is only 6 months old. Our backyard is "fenced" but its a wire fence so he can see through it. Cannot get out however. First thing we are going to do if I get this job is totally fence in the backyard with a proper fence that he will not be able to see through.
Is he going to be ok? I cannot, not take this job unfortunately, if it is offered, I will need to take it and try to do my best for Duke. We will try and get a dog walker, allow him to go in and out of the house whenever he needs to...
As far as neighbours or family: One neighbour I will probably give a key to but I don't think they will be willing to take him for a walk. I was thinking of giving him a key just in case Duke is outside barking a lot while we are on night shift he could come in and bring Duke inside and close the Doggy door. Family: they are just too far away. Closest is my dad at over an hour each way.
The very last thing I want to do is give Duke up. He is our family, but I don't want this to hurt him. If I knew this was coming a few months ago I would probably have waited a while until we are able to move closer to work but unfortunately my current job is giving me health issues and I need to make a change.
Any suggestions or opinions on how he will be?
