Another soft stool saga - Foster Dog
Yeah, yeah, I know - the never ending soft stool....
I am fostering a 7-8 year old German Shepherd. He is a very large boy. He is quite lean at 78 pounds, but he is too tall to fit in a crate sized for a 90 pound dog.
Upon arrival with his temp. foster, "King" had diarrhea. When I took him about a week later, he still had the squirts. I have had him since Aug. 26th.
Here is what I know:
!. He is negative for parasites and giardia.
2. He arrived with kennel cough.
3. I started him on a 10 day course of Doxy.
4. He finished the Doxy. on 9-7.
5. He sometimes drinks too much water.
Here is what I have done:
I have given peptobismal. I am feeding Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream. I made a mixture of ground beef and All Bran, which I mix with his food. I add a tablespoon of pumpkin to each meal. (He is fed twice a day.) Since the antibiotic, I am adding a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt to his food.
His stool has been soft, but formed. No more squirts. He has had NO accidents in the house. I notice the stool is better, when he drinks less water. We were moving along with the soft, but formed stools - 2 to 3 times a day. Until, yesterday. Yesterday, he did not have diarrhea, but he was dropping a little soft poo at a time, rather than one larger one. He also seemed to squat for a long time with nothing coming.
Should I add something more to his diet? Remove something from his diet? I am used to the soft stool thing with shepherds. I'm not looking for super firm. Seems too much to ask. Any suggestions welcome!
