Dog Attack Post-Op Care Tips ***Warning Graphic Pics***
On Saturday night Cafall was attacked by an akita while on a play date.
We were at our normal play date spot with our regular 'doggy friends'. On rare occasions in the past this akita has joined us but it had been months since we last saw it. Cafall, my gsd, was chasing my husky -- chase is their favorite game-- when my boys went darting past the akita's owner and best I can figure the akita thought they were rushing his owner and went on the offensive. My husky made it past in time but Cafall got bitten in the side.
There were several large chunks of flesh removed, but the worst damage was inflicted by formation of a very large pocket when the superficial layers of Cafall's skin were ripped away from the underlying connective tissues.
I rushed him to the vet. He was in surgery within the hour. He now has 20 staples closing the wounds and two drains in place. He is on both antibiotics and pain meds. I am using warm compresses and doing my best to keep the drains clean/clear.
My question is, does anyone have any tips or suggestions of things that might make him any more comfortable or that I can do to help support his recovery? We won't be back into the vet until Wednesday at the earliest and I just want to do everything I can to help him feel okay and get better.
He's being a super sweetie and eating and drinking normally. He's also been taking care of 'business' fine too. I just feel terrible about the whole thing and want to best by him. Obviously we will not be having any further 'play' sessions with the akita.
