I'm a newbie here with my 5month old Shepherd
There's a funny story as to how I got him actually. My parter is a professional dog trainer, has wanted a puppy for a very long time, but couldn't find the right one to train. Every night we'd go on craigslist or petfinder or what-have-you and just troll through the pictures and descriptions of dogs available.
Yesterday we came across an add for a free purebred GSD that he got from a prestigious kennel in California. He gave us the backdrop of this baby's life, he had him for about 2 months and he was going to be deployed in a week and couldn't keep him. So we decided, what's the harm in going to visit?
So we did. However when we got there and he said "He's out back" we were expecting him to be running around the backyard. This idiot had his 3k dog tied to a tree seeking shelter in a falling apart shed. He was feeding him small breed pedigree once a day and didn't even live in the falling apart house where he kept the dog. We didn't have time to say no. We adopted him.
My partner's dream come true dog, but I don't know the first thing about GSD's. Or really dogs as a whole. I was hoping this forum would give me some help so i don't have to embarrass myself and ask my partner.
He just turned five months old on August 29th and is weighing in (according to the previous owner) at about 45lbs. He doesn't understand the concept of "toy". It's like he's never been able to have something to play with before. He's wonderful in the car and at home. He's almost got potty-training down now and already knows which door is ours in the neighborhood. We're switching him over to Natural Balance and might try to find him some calcium because being switched from raw food (what the breeder fed him) to small breed pedigree could've done all kinds of damage to his growing process.
He's teething, which I understand is normal, but he bites my hands. How do I fix this? Is there a word or command or trick I should be doing? I was left alone at home with him for our first day of the adoption and I really don't know the first thing about entertaining a puppy other than playing tug...but he doesn't understand. I bought him some frozen marrow bones at the store and he loves them, but goes through them so quickly!
Any ideas, tips, or tricks anyone can share would be greatly appreciated.
Also he doesn't have a name yet so we're open to ideas!
