I've not heard of people doing it on purpose, that seems kind of lame. Why would a club want low entries? At least in SchH the cost of putting on a trial is basically fixed...you need a judge, lodging and transportation for the judge regardless of how many people trial so the more people pay an entry fee the better of it is for the club.
When I do SV shows I try to confirm the date well in advance and tell the club how many dogs I'm bringing (my own dogs plus any dogs I know I'll be handling). I've had events canceled because of low entries or not enough entries confirmed so if I really want the event to happen, I try to guarantee I will bring at least 5 dogs.
