I had to LOL at hubby feeding the new kitten. Our rule has always been dogs get nothing from the table. After we are done and not at the table some scraps can be given - rarely for Raina since she has food allergies, never at the table though. Pyrate was great at not begging. We started from when he was a puppy, not allowed in the kitchen while we eat but may lay at the door but must not look in. He would lay at the door and look the opposite direction until he heard us get up, then he would be ready to lick plates or whatever was offered. He never whined. I'm still working on that with Raina as she didn't get the same start he did on the whining rule since I got her a month later than Pyrate and she was never allowed free during meals. She guards toys and resources so would fight with Pyrate just enough to get whatever he had. I stopped that in the bud by not letting her in the kitchen at all.
