water in the ear
I have a 6 month old GSD who seems to be very sensitive to getting water in his left ear. Once wet he spends hours shaking his head, scratching his ear and whining. I do my best to dry it out with gauze - he is very cooperative despite the fact it seems to cause him discomfort (i.e. he whines) - but if I check later it's wet again. I have never had the same problem/reaction with his right ear.
My vet has said that as long as the ear wax looks and smells normal (which it does) then he's OK. He also suggested that GSDs should never get water in their ears. I don't want to second guess my vet but it seems strange to me that a dog bred as an outdoor working animal should have to avoid all contact with water. Going out in the rain seems to be one of the main causes of his problem and here (the Caribbean) it rains, heavily, most days.
I would be grateful for your suggestions on how to properly dry ears and any comments you might have about why Ringo is sensitive (in just one ear) and GSDs and water generally.
