What on earth is this behavior?
OK, confused about this new show of idiotic behavior! Jedda (now 9 months) and I were on a hike we frequent, had played a bit of fetch, walked quite aways, passed by two other off leash dogs and kept her focus on me, all good. We were sitting on a bench when a lady with a GSD and a Chi approached, not paying much attention to us. I was watching the GSD, trying to figure out how old he might be, because he had a funny gait. In a fraction of a second, Jedda was flying at him, "pretend" going for his throat but of course not actually making contact. Lucky for her and her slow-witted owner who was still sitting on the bench, he simply lifted a lip at her and kept going. She turned around like nothing and came back to me, looking kinda pleased with herself. I made her sit then down stay with a harsh voice, and apologized to the other owner, who acted fine even if she was rolling her eyes at the irresponsible GSD owner.
So what was that? Resource guarding? Protection? I've made other posts about her fear/bluster with other dogs, and we've been working on focusing on me while socializing, and I definitely dropped the ball in this encounter, but I'm still confused and curious about what she was doing, and how I should have handled it AFTER it happened - I know I wasn't managing her as I needed to. Thanks in advance!
