Hi all, haven't been on in a long time but things are well.
I recently adopted a new dog from a shelter. They had no info on her as she was a stray. All I know is she is spayed and is about 2 years old.
She looks mostly like a white german shepherd but occasionally I wonder if she is part Husky. I can't be certain.
Either way - her behavior puzzles me as I have never dealt with anything like this before.
She is fine in a crate - as long as we are in the room.
However, if we are upstairs and she is downstairs in the crate she gets quite anxious. If we come back into the room she's fine again. She will yelp, whine, paw and try to get out of the crate.
This afternoon was the big surprise. Since one time she really shook the crate trying to get out when we went shopping this afternoon I put her in a crate in the garage with some toys and bones. She has been in the garage before and was just fine when she was loose and with us.
Well, since she wound up alone in the garage and we weren't there she started whining. I decided to leave her and go to the store since she had calmed down.
When I got back I go to the garage and, to my surprise, she had broken out of the crate!
We have a kennel that looks and latches a lot like this:
pet shuttle – large pet | Petmate
I am not sure right now of the brand but can look.
She bent the front door, the top and bottom latch and pulled the door inward to get out.
Does anyone have any advice on what to do?
Will that type of crate ever hold her if I have to go out?
Do I need to get a SUPER heavy duty crate to keep her in?
If it matters to anyone she obviously needs training in some other areas but they're all quite minor - pulling while on lead is probably the biggest one. She hardly ever barks and, as I write this, she is lying in her crate inside totally relaxed - no whining or fussing.
I'm so confused...PLEASE HELP!
