It may help to remember that you really do need to pick a dog that fits your lifestyle. Bringing a dog home that you know probably won't fit and then either regretting that decision for as long as the dog lives which could be 10+ years wouldn't be right for either you or the dog or even worse having to return the dog later on.
Take your time making the decision, sometimes it's your first gut instinct that prevails or maybe not. It is a big decision but you do have to harden your heart slightly otherwise you'll walk out with 50 dogs
Don't think about the ones you leave behind being put down, just remember that they're being left for a owner that will be a better fit for it and they'll be happier in that house.
