Need advice/help on relative with possible dementia/Alzheimer's
My mother is almost 83 yrs old, lives alone. Recently she forgot my birthday and my daughters' birthday. I know many people forget birthdays and anniversaries, this is not typical of her. She is very detailed oriented in certain areas of her life. About six months ago I found a dementia assessment used in doctor's offices - it has math, telling time, memory tests, etc on it. I gave it to my mother and she scored mild to moderate dementia. Math skills and word searching are problem areas. She does well in all her activities of daily living; cleaning, cooking, self care, paying bills on time, gardening. Her physical health is overall good, she can only drive locally, around town.
Her forgetting my kids' birthday is scary for me. I have nothing to compare this behavior with - my father and his wife and my MIL are all cognitively well for 85 to 89 yr olds. My father in law died fairly young, no mental health issues.
From anyone's experience out there - is this a sign I should take her to a doctor and get an assessment? Is this part of normal aging? If her self care is good, should I be worried? Any words of wisdom would be helpful, thanks.
