Help! My GSD attacked my neighbor's dog
I'm brand new to this forum...hunted it down, so I could try to find answers.
Max is 2 years old. He's always been playful with our neighbor's dogs. The 2 of them crawl under the fence, then run around and pee on all the trees with Max.
Yesterday, I got a horse. He's very gentle, and there weren't many issues with Max. This evening, I rode the horse with Max following...all went well. Then, my neighbor walked up to the fence, so I rode over, got off the horse and talked to him.
As always, his dogs slid under the fence and started sniffing around. When they started sniffing around the horse, Max went nuts and attacked one of them. It was the most horrible thing I've ever witnessed! He had him by the throat and wouldn't let go. Was shaking him and throwing him around. (This was a medium sized dog)
I couldn't get Max to stop. He ignored all commands and I even tried to pull him off. I ran to get the water hose, but somehow the neighbor had separated them by the time I got back. It was probably a good thing that I didn't see how he did this...
My question: Why? Max has known the neighbor's dogs since he was a puppy.
Why would he be so protective over a horse that just arrived on the scene a day ago?
Is there something I could have done to stop this?
Is this going to happen again?
Any advice would be welcome.
