New behavior-- need advice!
9 month old intact male GSD has begun shredding my house plant. Same plant has been there since I got him at 7.5 weeks old. He's never touched it! Last week, he mauled a few pieces. When I got home from work, I walked over to begin picking up pieces, said a firm "no" when he came over to pieces/plant. He sulked and walked to his bed to lay down--totally guilty expression. I went back to work after feeding and walking him, and came home to an untouched plant. Thought he was testing the waters and we were past the "moment." He has never torn up anything before.
He repeated the behavior two more times back to back last week. I bought a new plant yesterday and some Nature Miracles' no chew spray. Came home today, and he had torn it up again.
I know that I can just remove the plant but I want to address the behavior. I'd hate to take away the plant and he move on to the couch instead.
He is well exercised and fed slightly over one cup of Fromm's large breed gold 3x day with access to water while I'm gone. I walk him at 7, 12:30, and then we do beach or forest preserve at 6:00. (If it's too hot, I'll just let him out quickly at 6:00 and save the longer walk/play time for closer to 8:00.)
Any ideas on this new behavior? Testing boundaries at this age?
He gets "leave it" and "no". Won't touch it if I'm here. I take opportunities to watch him go to it so that I can tell him to leave it. He listens. BUT when I'm gone...plant is dead meat.
He is a very well behaved dog otherwise...
