I hope this is the correct forum for gait issues in a 9-month-old.
Busa is a GSD/Great dane mix and we have recently noticed (when viewed from straight ahead or better from behind) when he trots he has a sidewinding gait. His left hind foot lines up with his right forefoot. He does not creep to the side, but moves straight forward, though his body is oriented obliquely. This is not noticeable when walking or all-out full throttle running, but only at a trot.
He is a neutered mixed-breed, so of course there is no issue pertaining to passing down a trait, but I wonder if the gait is an indication of future HD issues, or if we ought to be careful with his exercise as he finishes growing, etc.
He's very tall and lanky right now at 31.5" at the shoulder and 88 pounds, and the vet would like to see more muscle tone on him, since he had not gotten much exercise before he came to us last month. I will ask her about his gait, of course, but until his next visit with her I thought I'd get some feedback from those experienced with this particular issue.
