Since we picked her up a week ago (at 8 weeks) Lady had hardly really eaten. We'd been talking about switching her to raw diet when she was about a year old and in doing some research I found out that they can start much sooner...so today I picked up some chicken quarters and figured I'd give it a go. She's roughly 10lbs so should be eating about a pound a meal (according to the 10% of current puppy weight idea)...anyways...I cut the chicken quarters into 1/2 lb portions (one in the morning one at night) and while I was cutting them up she seemed super interested. Since she hadn't had tonight's feed yet I figured I'd try and feed her chicken instead. HUGE SUCCESS....I haven't seen her attack the food bowl like that since we've owned her!
So I figure I'll keep with the chicken quarters (bone included) for about a week and then start mixing in some new protein sources as recommended.
Here's where' the questions start...
I'd like to keep to a 50/40/10 ratio (Meaty Bones/Muscle Meats/Offal) per meal...is it advised to mix the proteins in each one? say 50% chicken quarter, 40% beef heart (or the like) and 10% whatever liver I can find?
In terms of suppliments...I've read mixed reviews. I'd like to get her on fresh fish as we eat quite a bit of it here at home our selves. Would that count as a bit of the muscle meats? or does it really matter? Should I just add fish oil every other day instead?
I'm stoked to see her suddenly excited about food and can't wait to see her grow into a strong, healthy dog.
Once I make it through this bunch of chicken quarters (about a weeks worth) I'll be buying a whole bunch of different cuts/sources and freezing them into meal sized portions for ease.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
