Hi guys. Last week, my 3 year old female GSD had small grape-sized lumps by her groin and under her jaw. I believe those were enlarged lymph nodes, which I told my vet. He said to keep her under observation and if anything changes, like increase in size etc, then we investigate further.
Then Wednesday evening this week, I noticed that her neck was swollen on one side, the size of an apple. Then the following morning, both sides were swollen.
I then set an appointment for a biopsy at an animal hospital for the following morning. The following morning, before we set off to the vet, her snout began to enlarge as well. She broke my heart when she looked at me.
We went to the vet, told her the growth happened within 2 days. She diagnosed an infection (hence pus abscess collecting in her face and neck) so to confirm, we did a blood panel expecting raised WBC given that she was battling an infection. She was also suffering from a fever.
Blood panel results came in with borderline low WBC and platelets, which was odd. So she suspected another infection, ehrlichia-a blood parasite, which she did test positive for.
We're now doing 2 antibiotics (for her face and for the ehrlichiosis), Tolfedine to keep her swelling and fever down, an antihistamine to keep her airway open, Tranexamic acid to prevent bleeding in case she bleeds internally due to platelet count, and Silymarin to protect her liver from the antibiotics.
It's been a day and a half since then and her face is still swollen, though her neck is improved. I'm just waiting for the abscess to drain as the pouch is getting hard already.
We'll be getting a check-up at the vet in 2 weeks to check out her ehrlichiosis again given that it takes at least 28 days to clear up.
Right now it's hard for her to eat due to her face but we still finish her food nice and slowly. Extra liver to keep her meds down, and more sleep than normal due to the antihistamine.
Hoping for the best. Any experiences similar to this? Any tips as well to make a dog feel better whilst in a month of meds that is killing her appetite?
