I know for mine, she never lies. When she does a certain whine, she has to do diarrhea.. and she also warns me when she has to vomit. So my suggestion is that when i doubt.. Let them out and dont say anything and give them a chance to do their business. And if they didnt, take them back in and put them in the crate or wherever you put them. That way if they were whinning, barking, etc. for a reason you responded appropriately. But the no talking to them, is for if they were doing it to get "attention," which i know for mine, this is never true at night time!

Definitely a lesson learned for me there, thankfully she passed it okay! I have taken her out at night before a couple of times, and thinking back on it every time she has barked like that it was because she needed to go, so from now on I will be taking her out, just not giving her attention.
