We brought our puppy home last Friday, so its been almost a week. He is such a smart and a good boy. He had two accidents so far only because it was our mistake of not taking him out right away. However, so far so good with house training. He is 10 weeks old now, He is a white GSD, His name is LEX
his weight is a bit low than what I've read however, we are trying to give him enough food. Last week the vet mentioned he weighs around 8 lbs and he was 9 weeks. Is that something to worry about?
I want to see how much he weigh now, we are taking him again on Sat.
We let him out every 2 and half hours at night and during the day 5-15 mins after eating unless he is taking a nap , then I usually wait 30 mins max. He pees right away outside, however, his poo timing varies. At times its right after I take him out first time , at times it takes 30 to an hour for him to poo. So still trying to figure that out.
He has been eating but I would say less a cup a meal. We have been feeding him 3 times a day, the second meal timing changes a bit at times depending on my work schedule as it changes.
I have few questions that I need help or answers for
1- He is put in the crate all night while we sleep and during the day while at work ( I work part time for now and max of 4 hours, sometimes 6 but I come home and take him out) and at times during the day when I need to do something and cant watch him.
My question is, should he be put in crate at all times?
He is usually spending time in our closed in kitchen (small kitchen, we live in an apt) closed in with a baby gate and we spend time with him in there as he doesnt like to be left alone. We are trying now to train him to be quiet for us to get back in with him in the kitchen without him whining.
2- I usually when I give him his meals , I leave it out for until he stops eating or drinking which is usually within 5-10 mins of him eating and drinking. Is that long enough?
I dont want to leave him hungry.
3- Housetraining, Now that he is doing very well so far and we keep on making sure that he does well , because it's never his fault if we dont take him out. My question is, when he is usually blocked in the kitchen with a baby gate or in his crate. How will he learn the "hit the bell" to let out if he does not have access to it where its on the front door ? Should I move the bell to the kitchen baby gate or is that something until later on when he can start moving around the carpet area? How or when is that an option to have them roam around some areas?
4- We are planning to enroll him in a puppy training class after he gets the shots that is needed. He is a good puppy but at times he gets scared of for example ( garbage pick up trucks , they are big and loud. Other dogs at times that we see from afar) However, with people, he is getting better and he does not bark at anything , he just wants to go in when he gets scared. He has gained more confidence since day 1 but still.
5- Whats the best way to keep him from biting on our pants, socks while wearing them ofcourse. I usually say Ouch loud and say NO and give him his bone to bite on. Any other effective ways to teach him?
6- What some basic trainings we can start on with him now that he is more comfortable at home after being here for a week?
7- What some treats that can help with doggy breath?
also things that helps with teething. I have a bone for him , I get him those greenies toothbrush things and I also freeze a wet rag and he loves biting on that during the night. He has a kong in his crate but he seems to not care much for that. Maybe he doesnt like the hard treats in it?
8- Regarding food, I did not know that until I read some posts on here after (I started feeding him , my mistake
) What is best to feed him? Adult dog food or puppy for large breed?
It seems that its hard to find a variety or more of large breed puppy at pet stores but I can try to get him that if that is best to feed.
That's all I can think of now. I will post a picture of him soon!
