Sorry - my brain is still a bit fuzzy from this cold I had/have!

The spots looked similar to what I had seen on my dog, Baxter... But they were on my parents' dog, Chaco. They vary from the size of a dime, up to the size of a quarter, and are dark, scabbed-over/crusted circles that reveal raw skin (from where Chaco scratched them off).

I was also thinking that it may be two separate things, but Chaco's vet was saying that the staph infection could appear anywhere on the dog's body?
