Really, though. Crate train.
I've only had Talos since Tuesday, but already he's going into his crate by himself when he wants to have a nap or a bit of chew time. Otherwise I'm constantly watching him, and this weekend, he's getting an xpen. You can definitely have a puppy in a new home if you're willing to make sure he/she isn't into anything.
It only takes a few days for puppy to realize that being in the crate doesn't mean that you're gone forever and they're never getting out. I timed it, and Talos has already gone from crying for 5 minutes or so to crying maybe once, and then laying down. Especially if I've had him running around.
So put the crate in your bedroom, acclimate him to it, and get him used to seeing you in the same room while he's in the crate and short jaunts out of the room so he's used to being in the crate when he can't see you too so he understands that the crate is a happy place and that no matter what, when you leave, you'll be back.
