Definitely have your vet test for EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency). It’s a condition in which the pancreas stops producing enough digestive enzymes to digest food normally and their system isn’t able to absorb the food’s nutrients, leading to weight lost and malnourishment. It’s a very common problem for German Shepherds and Collies. Besides the weight lost, the biggest sign is the very soft and runny stools. It’s as if everything he eats just goes right through him without being digested. My dog came down with EPI at about eight months old. We had to add pancreatic enzyme power to each of his meals and he quickly recovered.
Good luck and best wishes for a quick recovery!
