Xander arrived at the public shelter in Baton Rouge, La. nearly two weeks ago. His stray hold is up, and he's available for adoption or euth.
He's got a beautiful face and eyes that radiate intelligence. He's large and athletic. He's very friendly with volunteers and staff. He is self-confident and eager to meet new people and explore.
Xander arrived with a purebred Rottweiler as his "traveling companion," so we know he gets along with some other dogs. He was also introduced to a small, energetic female dog, and he was polite and well-mannered during the meeting.
He's been at the shelter for just a couple of weeks, but he's already starting to show signs of "German Shepherd Shelter Syndrome" -- depression, lack of appetite and lethargy. The difference in him just from last weekend to this weekend was striking. I really want to see him get out of there and into a good home soon.

This is a "kill" shelter trying to transition to a "no kill" future. His adoption fee is $80 (which covers neutering, microchip and up-to-date shots). They also have a partnership with Companions for Heroes to reimburse the adoption fee for approved first responders and military (go to
companionsforheroes.org for more info). This shelter
will consider out-of-state adoptions, to approved adopters willing to arrange transport (though they may seek a courtesy home-check by a reputable rescue in your area).
