We pulled up all the linoleum and carpet in the living room and kitchen, removed the adhesive, and stained the concrete ourselves. Total cost was less than $350 and it took about 3 long days. The hardest part was getting the old linoleum and glue up. And it absolutely does NOT absorb or retain smells. Get a couple more quotes from people on Craigslist; unless you're doing intricate designs stained concrete is not expensive or difficult to do.
