U.S. troops help with life
after 'Mitch'
One man who made a difference
In Nicaragua, a good Samaritan from the United States was honored by the
army for his voluntary efforts in unearthing bodies of people killed in a
massive mudslide provoked by Hurricane Mitch.
Frederick Golva of Chicopee, Massachusetts, received the Fulfillment of
Duty-Soldier of the Nation medal which the military bestows on soldiers and
civilians whose work is distinguished by extraordinary efforts.
President Arnoldo Aleman presided over the ceremony, in which more than 1,200
people were honored for their work to help victims of the hurricane.
Golva, accompanied by his German shepherd Ammo, arrived in Nicaragua earlier
this month to search for victims of the October 30 mudslide. The pair discovered
79 bodies.
